Free junior golf clinic at Hilo Muni, Hualalai

Hawaii Junior Golf Day will be held at Hilo Muni and Hualalai on Saturday, March 11, sponsored by the Aloha Section PGA and the Hawaii State Junior Golf Association. This event is free and for new and beginning junior golfers ages 5-18.

Registration is 8:30 a.m. followed by a free kids golf clinic by PGA/LPGA professionals from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.. Refreshments will be provided along with certificates of completion and a tee prize to take home. Parents will also receive information on how to get started in junior golf in Hawaii through the “Roadmap to Junior Golf.”

Igawa leads Vuls golf at Texas tournament

UH-Hilo shot 338 on Monday and 337 on Tuesday to finish at 115 over par at the St. Edward’s Invitational in Austin, Texas.

Vulcan junior Andi Igawa was her team’s top player for the tournament with a 77-84 (+21), tying her for 49th place. Keely Kitamura was next (87-81), followed by Mariah Paiste (85-85) and Erin Costes (89-87). Kitamura’s 81 on Tuesday was UHH’s top round of the day.

The Vuls next play March 14-15 at the Dr. Donnis Thompson Intercollegiate, hosted by the University of Hawaii in Kaneohe.

Soccer referee class at Amaulu field March 19

Hilo AYSO Region 274 will hold a basic soccer referee class for all interested in understanding the rules of soccer March 19 at Amaulu Field from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The class is free and open to all with lunch provided. Instructors Troy Keolanui and Greg Scott will cover the rules of the game, mechanics, and game control.

AYSO intermediate coaching class in March

An intermediate soccer coaching class, sponsored by Hilo AYSO Region 274, is scheduled for March 4 and 5. The course is free and open to all. The class will be run by Don and Joy Memmer and assisted by Troy Keolanui. The instructors have a combined 75 years of experience coaching youth ages 4-19.

The two-day course will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Saturday, March 4 session will be held at the Wainaku Executive Center while March 5 will be a field session at Amaulu Field.

Participants should wear appropriate outdoor practice clothes and bring soccer shoes. Shin guards are recommended as well as note-taking materials and a soccer ball.

Basketball training in Kona

A basketball training program will be held at Kekuaokalani gym at Old Airport Feb 26, March 4, 11 and 26 for ages 10 and up. This is an advanced year-round program and previous experience is preferred. Trainers for this program are Cheyenne Meyer, Eddie “Piki” Heyward, Lawrence Kauka, Rory Cabatbat and James “Nish” Nishimura.
